It is everyone’s favorite time of year: when 16 seeds are upsetting number one seeds and last second buzzer beater shots messing up everyone’s brackets up. March Madness is back in session.
March Madness is a college basketball tournament that begins in March and continues into early April. There are 68 teams to start, and the competition is single-elimination, making only one team the final champions.
This year there have been too many upsets to count, destroying people’s brackets and their chances of winning. Let us take a look at our very own Barque members to see how their brackets are doing and what strategies that they live by.
Starting off, we have our three senior Editors-in-Chiefs: Vaughn Ederer, Will O’Hara and Rowan Gerron.
Ederer claims that he knows ball. He lives by the motto, “Just choose Michigan”.
A tip that Ederer would offer to beginners is to pick teams who have at least one star player; they have a higher chance of making it far.
O’Hara, who is another EIC, does not know ball like Ederer does. However, he believes that “you got to pick at least a few upsets”.
“This year I picked a few underdogs like High Point, which didn’t work out for me”.
Lastly, Gerron has the same game plan every year: “Pick Texas Tech all day every day”.
He has faith in them every year, and one year, they are going to win for him!
Senior Daniel Debenport who is on the business team likes to keep it simple and picks the team with “the better mascot”.
Kim Richardson, our very own Barque teacher, has a couple of fun superstitions that she always goes by.
“Number one: if ‘saint’ is in the name give them one round because they have a higher power working for them. Number two: if they have ‘state’ in their name, then give them two wins because they are jocks,” Richardson says.
She even gets as serious as picking which team’s color has a better feel and vibe. “Blue team and green team over red teams,” Richardson says.
When it comes to picking teams for March Madness brackets it can come down to the little technical stats or whatever team is giving you a better vibe. The magic of March Madness is you never know which team is going to win.
The final two teams this year were UConn and Michigan. Michigan eked in the win against UConn by only 6 points, a close scoring game 69-63.
Looks like this year Ederer’s moto is best, “Just choose Michigan”.
