Every winter an opportunity arises for students at Bellevue High School. The Snowflake Lane parade occurs every year from November 29th to December 24th at Bellevue Way Northeast Fourth Street to Northeast Eighth street between the Lincoln and Bellevue Square Malls. Families who attend the show are provided with a magical and memorable experience full of music, dancing, snow and candy.
Participating in the Snowflake Lane parade is a fun job opportunity that provides students with important skills such as time management, commitment, teamwork and responsibility. It also allows students to build a resume and interact with people from different schools and backgrounds. Wages start at about $40 a night, which totals to around $1000 by the end of the event schedules, allowing workers to recover from their holiday spending comfortably.
Despite the benefits that Snowflake Lane presents to students, the drawbacks may upset the opportunity for some. Intense hours on weekdays cut into time that many students use for homework which add an extra layer of stress. With more time spent in the parade, participants may find it difficult to spend quality time with family during the holiday season. Not only that, but if a performer misses a day of work, they are fined, deducting from their check given at the end of the month, adding more pressure on top of everything else.
"Snowflake Lane gave me new opportunities to meet new people and make great friendships during the holiday season! But there was also a downside of not being able to be with my family as much during the whole season of Snowflake Lane, as well as late work hours. The last show day takes you away from Christmas Eve holiday activities with your family as well. During the whole month, you can’t do too much outside the window of free time," sophomore Valerie A Avdeyev, said.
In conclusion, while Snowflake Lane can be an amazing opportunity for students, providing them with useful skills and money, but also may inflict stress and prevent the students from spending time with family and friends. So, is Snowflake Lane a good or a bad opportunity?
