Halfway through the school year, some students find themselves with a brand-new schedule featuring different electives, while others continue with the exact same classes from their first semester. Students make these schedule choices in the spring of the previous year. Both situations have their own advantages and challenges, leading to unique learning experiences.

A change in electives can serve as a much-needed refresh button. New classes open doors to interests you may not have explored before, from culinary arts to tech theater and digital design. They can also help you discover hidden talents or passions that might shape your future career path. Additionally, switching classes introduces you to different classmates and teachers, expanding your social network and broadening your perspectives.

“I like having new electives 2nd semester, because the same classes every week get boring. I also like that I get to meet new people that I’ve never really talked to before”, said junior Luis Leyva.

For Leyva, the change of scenery and opportunity to make new friends makes having new electives all worth it. Do those things matter to you? For a lot of people, they don’t.

Choosing to take classes that all last the entire year has its benefits, too. Familiarity breeds confidence, and if you've already built strong relationships with your teachers and classmates, the second semester can feel smoother and more manageable.

“I take a lot of AP classes, and since those last two semesters, my schedule stays the same all year. It honestly doesn’t bother me because I want to take a lot of AP classes, and I also find them interesting”, said junior Ishaan Mishra.

Mishra, like a lot of other students here at Bellevue, prioritizes AP classes and embraces their year-long nature.

Continuing in the same classes also allows for a deeper dive into subjects you’ve grown passionate about, leading to a more enriching and in-depth learning experience.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your personal priorities. If you’re looking for growth and new experiences, choosing different electives for second semester at the start of the year might be the right move. But if you value stability and mastery, choosing to keep the same classes year-round could be the better option. Whatever your schedule looks like this semester, make sure to embrace all the new learning opportunities ahead. Good luck!
