The Grammys celebrated their 68th televised event on February 1st. The night was filled with talented musical artists, countless celebrities and fashion. Trevor Noah came back as the host for his sixth consecutive year. He announced during the show that this year was his last year hosting the Grammys, allowing him to push the boundaries with the jokes and jabs!
When it comes to fashion, the red carpet is the place to watch the artists show off their custom looks. Lady Gaga channeled the black swan and showed up in a floor length black feather dress to represent her Mayhem album that came out last March. Sombr impressed many reporters on the red carpet, with a silver suit that resembled a disco ball and a silver see-through lace shirt underneath. Heidi Klum confused many with her nude latex minidress that was molded to her back end and snapped her in along the sides. The shocker of the night was Chappell Roan let’s; just say the top of her dress was attached to her two piercings, and I’m not talking about the piercings in her ear lobes. Overall, the dresses and suits shocked and awed, allowing the artists to express their creativity outside of their music.
Since it is the Grammys, there are always an abundance of performances. Some of the highlights were: Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Rosé, Tyler the Creator, Clipse with Pharrell Williams and Alex Warren. All the artists put on quite a show with dancing, prop airplanes, and basket hats. There was only one hiccup during Alex Warren’s performance. He traveled through the crowd singing, “Ordinary” when he had an issue with his earpiece. Warren was unable to hear his backtrack, so they were at different places in the song when he made it to the mainstage. He corrected the mishap like a pro and got himself in sync with the backup singers as soon as he could hear.
Many of our Bellevue High School students watched the Grammys. Sophomore Izzy Schulam and Freshman Katie Quinn each had their own favorite performance.
“I liked Olivia Dean’s performance because she has a strong voice and lots of talent for a new artist,” said Schulam.
Olivia Dean was nominated and won best new artist; she has grown so much in this year and has a hit song called “Man I Need.”
“My favorite performance was Sabrina Carpenter because it was so creative,” explained Quinn.
Watching the Grammys is not just watching the singer sing; many artists made it a visual event too; the performances had props and energy. Tyler the Creator blew up a prop gas station at the end of his performance; it was one to remember!
Kendrick Lamar took home five awards this year, making his total Grammy count 27. This bumped him ahead of Jay-Z who has 25 Grammys, making Lamar the most-awarded rapper in Grammy history. Not only did Lamar have the most awards but he was also nominated in nine different categories.
The Grammys is a special event focusing on music and the artists behind the songs. The performances, artistic interpretation and fashion are worth the watch. There is always something a little shocking, a joke that goes a little far, and best of all, some good music to enjoy.
