Christmas is just around the corner, and what better way is there to celebrate than to sit down in front of the fireplace and cup a mug of hot chocolate? Of course, this wonderful time of year should not be dragged down by some cheap convenience store powder that tastes watery and artificial. Instead, you should try this hot chocolate recipe that is quick, easy and delicious for this year’s holiday season. I promise you will never want to drink hot chocolate made from powder again after tasting this.

Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe (two servings, 10-15 minutes)

Ingredients:

-          Two cups whole milk

-          Two tablespoons sugar

-          Four ounces chopped chocolate (preferably dark)

-          A few drops of vanilla extract (optional)

Step 1:

Combine the milk and sugar in a saucepan and put it over medium heat. For the sugar, you can decrease the amount if you are using a sweeter milk chocolate instead of a dark chocolate.

Step 2:

Put the chopped chocolate in a bowl and microwave for 10 seconds. Take it out and stir it. Repeat this process until the chocolate is mostly melted, but be careful not to overheat it, since doing so could cause grainy textures.

Step 3:

Once the milk reaches the scalding point (around 180 Fahrenheit or 82 Celsius), you should see a ring of bubbles around the walls of the pot. Make sure not to boil the milk. At this point, you can turn off the heat and put in the melted chocolate. Mix it well and add vanilla extract to taste.

Voila! Your homemade hot chocolate is done. Now all you need to do is pour it into a mug and add any toppings you want. Marshmallows, whipped cream and a candy cane are must-haves in my opinion.
