On February 27th, 2026, the Japanese video game company Capcom released Resident Evil Requiem, the highly anticipated 9th installment of the survival horror game series. The game was so popular that, as of March 16th, it’s been crowned as the fastest-selling game in the series, selling six million units within the first two weeks of its release. It’s also highly rated, boasting an 89% score on Metacritic.
The game follows fan-favorite police officer Leon Kennedy as well as a new protagonist named Grace Ashcroft, an FBI agent and the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a character from the earlier Resident Evil Outbreak (2004). Both Leon and Grace set out to investigate the mysterious deaths of survivors of the Racoon City Incident (from previous Resident Evil storylines), and the game switches between the perspectives of the two characters throughout the course of the story. Resident Evil Requiem uses these dual perspectives to incorporate the best elements of Capcom's previous games to create an interesting and engaging experience.
Previous Resident Evil games have alternated between titles that focus on horror versus those that focus on action. Resident Evil 1-3 leaned heavily towards being scary, while 4-6 focused on more explosions and shooting time. Though Capcom leaned back into the horror style for the seventh game, it returned to action in the eighth. Scarier games are characterized by vulnerable protagonists who act more outwardly frightened, putting greater focus on exploration and fear. These games use techniques like recursive unlocking, a level design pattern in which characters slowly expand the map by unlocking doors and creating shortcuts. The protagonists are there to explore and survive, making for a slower-paced horror-focused experience with zombies and other antagonists. However, in the action-leaning Resident Evil games, the protagonists are much stronger. The level of tension is naturally much lower when the main character is confident in their abilities to kill every zombie. These games generally progress more linearly, with the focus being on powerful characters fighting huge big-boss[1] antagonists. The two styles are very different, but both common among previous installments of Resident Evil.
Resident Evil Requiem diverges from this pattern because it combines both the horror and action elements from previous games. Grace is a scared and vulnerable character, making players of her sequences feel much more on-edge. Her hands even visibly shake while holding her gun. However, Leon, consistent with previous games, is confident and powerful, making his gameplay much more focused on action. With this strategy, Resident Evil Requiem attempts to address both the horror and action-favoring audiences.
Whether you’ve played the whole series or are new to the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Requiem is an excellent game for lovers of both survival horror and zombie shooters. The game is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows, and GeForce Now.
"big-boss antagonists" is pretty good. You might also consider, "big boss monsters" or "monster bosses."
