How to Use (Waste) Summer Vacation

Jun 13

There’s only so much precious time before the grind of school begins again, and though summer vacation might seem like the perfect time for resume building and hobby exploring, wasting your time on such activities is sure to be something you’ll regret. Avoiding productive work is the only proper way to spend your summer—it’s called break for a reason! Instead, follow the below steps for a perfectly unproductive summer break:

1.     Change Screen Time Habits:

Summer is a great time to tackle unhealthy screen time habits. Try setting a new screen time goal—anywhere from six to eight hours a day is a good starting point, though as the summer progresses, nine or ten hours are better benchmarks to aim for. Another suggestion: instead of doomscrolling in a chair, try lying horizontally in bed when using social media. It’s far more comfortable, allowing you to make each doomscroll session longer.

2.     Experiment with Sleep Schedule:

Without the need to wake up in time for school at 8 AM, summer is the perfect opportunity to change up your sleep schedule. Summer nights are the perfect time to take advantage of Bellevue’s amazing nightlife. Push your bedtime back one, two, or maybe even five hours. Try playing Madden or FIFA with your friends at midnight—when the sun goes down, the screens come up. The possibilities are endless!

Doomscrolling could be your next summer hobby!

3.     Become a Gym Rat

No excuses this time—it’s just you and the gym. If you really want those big gains, now’s the time to get them. But it’ll be hard to find motivation without a shift in your mindset. The easiest way to implement this is to never leave the gym. Bring a sleeping bag, a pillow and maybe a Nintendo Switch. Drink exclusively protein shakes or smoothies and make the gym your home. People won’t recognize you when school starts again—the change will be that drastic.

What are you waiting for? Now’s the time to implement those changes in your life that you’ve always wanted to implement but never had the time to do.
