Halloween traditionally has been known for spooks and scares, often reflecting the latest scary movie. Recently, Halloween costumes have slowly become less about scaring the person who opens the door and more about being on trend.
Many teenagers are taking a cuter, more popular approach to their costumes this year. Instead of dressing up as a clown or famous horror movie characters like Chucky, Ghostface, or Freddy Kruger, people are dressing up as an animal or their favorite TV show characters.
Group Halloween costumes can be so fun with friends. You spend weeks arguing about what theme you want to choose which becomes a competition for who did it best. It’s also fun to do a duo theme if you don’t have many people.
A popular costume this year and one that is blowing up on social media are the genies from the show “Shimmer and Shine.” This is a great idea for anyone who wants to stay on trend but still wants to have a costume with lots of unique and customizable aspects. The clothing you need for this is a gold, shiny top with a gold or white skirt. A great way to dress up the accessories would be a coin skirt, tons of gold jewelry, gold head piece, and even some temporary color in your hair. The sky is the limit to how far you want to push the gold.
If you want a Halloween costume for a boy/girl duo watch “10 Things I Hate about You” and dress up as the painting scene. Wear a white painter’s jumpsuit, clear googles, and if you want to make it even more realistic, splash paint on it yourself.
Sophomore Jace Bacon had another very creative duo costume.
“I am being Brad Pitt in ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’,” said Bacon.
I can’t wait to see how this costume turns out on Halloween. Bacon is also expecting to see lots of people dressed up as the Lorax in 2025 for no reason, so on Halloween we can expect to see lots of orange bodies and yellow mustaches. At least this costume will keep you warm if the weather isn’t cooperating!
A larger group theme that is popular is different animals; there are endless opportunities, and you can include a ton of people in this costume. Animal prints are back on trend this year, especially cheetah prints. Put on some animal ears, draw a little nose and some whiskers on your face, and add any animal print top or bottoms. This is a simple costume…cheap, easy, and great for big groups. You can go a step further and make your animal a Beanie Baby by adding the “ty” heart tag.
Freshman Ivy Tran is expecting lots of animal prints on Halloween, but she has a different idea for herself.
“I’m going to be a sailor, but I think I’ll be seeing lots of animal costumes,” said Tran.
Now let’s talk about solo costumes, Tran’s idea is a good one. A sailor is an excellent costume; you just need to get a sailor hat and then the rest is up to you. Girls, you can wear a blue skirt or top, or a blue dress, and boys, any polo shirt and shorts (especially khakis) would work perfectly. This can be a solo costume, or you can even incorporate different costumes tied together. For example, a mermaid, pirate, fisherman, all fun to accessorize and build on.
Another great solo costume that can be incorporated into a group is a superhero or villain. There are so many movies to take inspiration from, and it can work for a girl or boy. Superheroes have been seen throughout all ages and have been popular for many years, the ones seen most are Joker, Batman, Spiderman and Superman. These are easy to buy at a costume store, or you can go on internet and get creative.

If you don’t love any of these ideas or want to find a less used costume, look on social media especially TikTok and Pinterest, people have already been sharing their costumes, and you can see how people style them and make them your own.
