Kefir is the hottest trend on nutrition and health TikTok. Promises of weight loss and improving gut health has made this fermented milk beverage appealing to the masses. However, to the normal consumer, these buzz words mean absolutely nothing. What is the importance of our gut health and why do people care so much about consuming “good” bacteria?

Good bacteria typically refer to probiotics which are microbes that live in your gut/stomach that strengthens its functions. Probiotics fight off harmful bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, ensuring your gut microbiome is healthy. A healthy gut microbiome helps digestion and your immunity to diseases. It is crucial to take care of your gut health as it is a factor in your body’s overall health.

The popularization of Greek yogurt in diet culture and cultural dishes like kimchi are more than a tasty snack. The fermentation these foods undergo make them perfect in strengthening your health as they are major sources of probiotics. Maintaining your gut health impacts your skin, behavior, and physical performance. If your skin is breaking out, consider in implementing a diet emphasizing probiotics.

with loads of vitamins and a similar texture to yogurt that has made a dramatic entrance into TikTok’s algorithm. Videos of influencers describing the changes they have seen in their bodies after taking kefir has popularized gut health. Similarly, a few years ago Kombucha, another probiotic drink, had every young adult and teenager in a chokehold as it also promised the same health benefits as kefir. Probiotics have always been advertised in mass media and its importance in our bodies has not dwindled, gut health is just not discussed enough to younger audiences. It is important we prioritize our gut health as it can solve many confusing complications in our bodies.
