The holiday season is a time to show the people you care about how much they mean to you, often through giving gifts.  Many students feel pressured to find perfect presents for friends, despite a small budget. Between school expenses, activities, and saving up for the future, not everyone has extra money to spend on pricey presents. The good news is that you don't need much money to give something meaningful. With a bit of creativity and planning, you can find or make thoughtful gifts within your budget that your friends will truly appreciate.

DIY gifts are a popular and affordable option. Handmade items show effort and thought, which can make them more meaningful than store-bought gifts. For example, take sugar scrubs and bath salts. These spa-inspired gifts are easy to make with simple ingredients like Epsom salt, coconut oil, and essential oils like lavender. They are not only easy to make, but are also relaxing presents with wide appeal, showing that handmade gifts can be just as good as purchased ones.

“I used to stress a lot about spending money on gifts, but I’ve realized that people appreciate the thought more than the price. Last year I handmade candles for my friends, and they actually loved them,” said junior Ada Floyd.

If crafting isn't your thing, affordable store-bought items can still feel special when they're thoughtfully put together. Mugs and slippers are popular choices, especially during winter months, and they pair well with hot chocolate, tea bags, or snacks. Creating a mini gift basket and adding a theme, such as a cozy night kit or stress-relief package, shows that you considered your friends' interests. Including a handwritten card can make even a simple gift feel much more meaningful.

“Being on a budget forces you to get creative, whether it's putting together a care package or just planning to hang out, those gifts feel more personal anyway,” said sophomore Miyah Turner

Experience-based gifts are another good option. Planning a movie night, coffee run, or another hangout is a simple way to show appreciation and spend quality time together. These experiences can also be paired with a small gift or a note, making the present feel more memorable and personal.

At the end of the day, holiday gifting isn't about how much you spend; it's about showing you care. With these budget-friendly options, you can spread holiday cheer without stressing your wallet.
