Our History
Bellevue High School was founded in 1923, though its beginnings were much more humble. Initially called Main Street School, the class of 1923 consisted of just three graduating seniors and had just one classroom. Three years later, in 1926 Barque was founded as the school's weekly publication, though it soon shifted to monthly publication.
Over time, the Barque slowly became more recognizable to its modern-day form. By 1951, the Barque -- now the newspaper of the newly renamed Overlake High School -- had grown to twelve members, with a dedicated faculty adviser. And by 2012, the Barque had grown to over thirty members, with dedicated editors, section editors, copy editors, staff writers, and staff artists. Yet one thing remains constant: over its nearly 100-year lifetime, Barque has brought together a community of passionate individuals dedicated to the publication and representation of Bellevue High's student voice.
